Food and Night Life
A few food recommendations for the College Park neighborhood from Mike Roller. A public google map of all restaurants can be viewed here: http://goo.gl/maps/OxrYP. Walkable options marked with an *.
Bobby’s Burger Palace* – This fancy burger place is not far off the periphery of the campus, along Route 1, just north of the main campus entrance. It is in a new large mixed-use building with residences upstairs. A plus is that Looney’s Pub (see below) is one storefront down. Bobby’s burgers are delicious and fancy, but on the expensive side. But what do you expect for a burger dressed with watercress and goat cheese? The best items on the menu, though, are the alcoholic milkshakes. (8150 Baltimore Avenue College Park, MD 20740; 240.542.4632)
Chipotle/ Noodle’s and Company/ Starbucks/ Cluck U/ Five Guys/ Ratsies*… you get the picture- A land of strip malls near campus down Route 1. Abundant clusters of fast food interspersed among college bars can be found here in all varieties of Pizzaburgerchinesenoodlechicken. A Starbucks offers a quiet place for caffeination and contemplation, as well. (7332 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, MD 20740)
Ten-Ren’s Tea House* – In the first strip of buildings just south of the campus. Kind of a small gem amongst the aforementioned, Ten Ren’s serves all manner of Taiwanese bubble tea along with a small menu of meals and snacks. Nice place to chill on a couch with a laptop. (7418 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, MD 20740; 301.864.8920)
Franklin’s – The gem of Hyattsville, a community about 3 miles south of campus on Route 1. This microbrewery has been a community institution for years now. Built in the shell of an old hardware store, they brew their own beer and feature a decent menu with good meat-based and veggie options. The Cuban sandwich is a lunch favorite along with the Rueben. Personal pizzas and veggie burgers are also delicious. (5121 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781; 301.927.2740)
Busboys and Poets – A new addition to Hyattsville, Busboys is a D.C. based franchise that recently expanded to Hyattsville. It is a restaurant, bar and café combination with a performance space. (Saturday night event at the NEAA will be held here). The menu features relatively inexpensive food, both veggie and meat-based; with a decent beer selection. In the same strip are a number of other restaurants including faster service Indian, Mexican and burger places. Beware the hellish parking situation though! (5331 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781; 301.779.2787)
Shagga Coffee & Restaurant – This delicious place is in Riverdale Park, in a former Mr. Donuts, right along Route 1 south of campus and just south of Rt. 410. It serves great Ethiopian food, arguably THE local cuisine of the DC metro area which hosts the largest population of Ethiopians outside of the country. You can wash down a delicious Chicken Tibbs with a selection of Ethiopian beers. The vegetarian combo is extremely delicious as well. (6040 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781; 240.296.3030)
Chef Secret/ Siri’s – This delicious Thai restaurant is on the fancy/ romantic side of things. The menu has both Thai and American classics (the chef’s secret???). Thai curries are very good, as are the desserts (bread pudding!). I personally like the duck curry, made with pineapple and cherry tomatoes. Located in a very unassuming building down Greenbelt Road, about three miles northeast of campus. (5810 Greenbelt Road, Greenbelt, MD 20770; 301.345.6101)
Plato’s Diner* – Inexpensive, classic locally-owned diner housed in a former Howard Johnson’s turned Bob’s Big Boy turned into Plato’s in 1994. Located just a mile south of campus along Route 1. Classic diner breakfast served at all hours, endless cups of coffee, pie, pancakes and gyros await you here. (7150 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, MD 20740; 301.779.7070)
Bagel Place of College Park* – Great breakfast spot. Bagels are about the best you will get south of New Jersey (actually… not great… but decent). A welcome and popular breakfast option. Busy in the mornings for the college crowd. Practically across the street from the south entrance to campus. It also features a decent lunch menu with sandwich options such as BLT, Reuben, soup and good veggie options. (7423 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, MD 20740; 301.779.3900)
Mama Lucia’s – A sit-down Italian restaurant with decent prices and large portions. I like the eggplant parm, and the other stuff, too… Wine in large servings can be purchased with a meal by the glass. (4734 Cherry Hill Road, College Park, MD 20740; 301.513.0605)
Marriot Hotel Bar* – Small hotel bar with a decent beer selection. Quiet. Can be an interesting crowd in the bar reflecting whatever conference sub-culture is featured at the Marriot that week. (University Boulevard at Adelphi Road College Park, MD 20783; 800.888.8682)
Stamp Student Center/ market/ food court* – Starbucks (upstairs); Food court: McDonalds, Taco Bell, Panda, Sbarro’s, Chick-Fil-A… nuff said. (1220 Stamp Student Union, College Park, MD)
Stamp Student Center Co-op* – The Co-op is the underground opposition to the food court. Only open on weekdays. Started in the 1970s as guerilla sandwich sales challenging the hegemony of on-campus food service, it was given its own space in 1975. Mythology suggests the anthropology department at that time helped foment this mini food revolution. The co-op has great veggie sandwiches, hot food entrees, coffee, pastries and snacks. Find it in the basement below the food court. (1220 Stamp Student Union, College Park, MD)
Adele’s* – The fancy restaurant on campus, Adele’s serves as the lunch spot for many of the visiting dignitaries and guests of the university. Too bad for you, they no longer serve the “legendary” lobster ravioli. They still have delicious pasta dishes, salads and a pretty decent Cuban sandwich. Chocolate lava cake is a dessert favorite if you have time. Friday has a pretty amazing all-you-can eat lunch buffet. (1220 Stamp Student Union, College Park, MD)
College Bars: Barking Dog/ Cornerstone/ Bentley’s* - These are your typical college bars. All three are on Route 1 just south of campus. They get pretty raucous on weekend nights. Happy hour is quieter and the beer and salty greasy bar food is usually quite inexpensive. (vicinity of: 7325 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, MD 20740)
Looney’s Pub* – A newish bar just north of Campus, it has good beer on tap and a nice airy construction with high ceilings. Delicious Fat Tire on tap. Busy on weekend nights. (8150 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, MD 20740; 240.542.4510)
Woodlands – This delicious South Indian vegetarian restaurant is a gem. The dosais are a favorite. The weekend lunch buffet is really amazing featuring lesser known Indian Chinese cuisine. Fruit flavored lassis are also quite amazing. In keeping with the prohibitive menu, no alcohol is served. (8046 New Hampshire Avenue, Langley Park, MD 20783; 301.434.4202)
Samantha's Restaurant – This restaurant reflects the character of the Langley Park neighborhood, serving a diverse assortment of Latino cuisines, though it is a bit upscale from the taco and papusa trucks that often line the road as you travel in this direction out of the university. The menu features ceviche, burritos and chimichangas and even beef tongue served Portuguese style. Margaritas are quite delicious. (631 University Boulevard East, Silver Spring, MD 20901; 301.445.7300)
